Just a quick post to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and wishing you a wonderful 2017. It’s beginning to look like a busy one, so I promise to keep you posted re gigs, recording and all the various other things that keep me occupied and out of mischief. Best wishes, JW
My tribute and accompanying lesson based on the style of the great Irish guitarist Louis Stewart is in the current issue of Guitar Techniques (GT263), available now. Louis was a truly staggering player and he will be sorely missed by the jazz community worldwide.. JW
I had the great pleasure of contributing to a feature in the new Guitarist magazine called Master It Faster, alongside great musicians and educators, Phil Hilborne, Denny Ilett and Geoff Lea. It’s a really well put together piece, so congratulation to David Mead and it contains some great solid tuitional advice along with some interesting and original tips and ideas. Hope you enjoy it.. JW
It is with great pleasure that I can announce that my book, Improvising Blues Guitar, has been translated into Italian by Pierluigi Bontempi and published once again by Scott & Co.
You can find it here:
It’s been a busy couple of months, with fantastic gigs at both the Liverpool Philharmonic Music Room with Remi Harris and Robin Nolan and the Tribute to Django Reinhardt evening at the Troubadour in Earl’s Court. This month sees the amazing Thomas Lang go on tour to promote his new album, The German Alphabet. It’s a great band and the music is a lot of fun to play so hopefully see you at one of the gigs.
My lesson into the style of the great American fusion guitarist Steve Khan is in this month’s Guitar Techniques (GT261). He’s both a great player and a great educator and definitely one to check out. JW
Hot off the press, the new edition of Robin Nolan’s Gypsy Jazz Secrets. Featuring a selection of unique video interviews, performances and bite sized lessons, this month features the great David Grisman and the first in a series of snappy tutorials to get you straight to the heart of this style from yours truly. This is a really good resource for anyone looking to develop their gypsy jazz playing and helps to keep the musical community connected. http://www.gypsyjazzsecrets.com/
There’s two from me in the latest Guitar Techniques Magazine, a ten page tutorial on playing above the 12th fret and a style file analysis of the great Count Basie rhythm ace, Freddie Green. It’s a busy weekend for gigs too. I’m very excited to be playing at the International Mersey River Festival on Sunday 5th June with the Wack Pack at 3.30pm and then dashing off to watch Steve Vai play Passion And Warfare in Manchester. Busy busy.. JW
I’m proud to announce a show I’m doing a little later this year (September 3rd to be precise) with the fantastic guitarists, Robin Nolan and Remi Harris, at the new Music Room at the Liverpool Philharmonic. It’ll be a great gig. These two are truly wonderful players and I’m looking forward to this tremendously. Better get as much practice in as possible between now and then and hope to see you there. Tickets are selling fast so grab one whilst you can. JW.
Last night’s gig at the New Brighton Floral Pavilion went down fantastically well. The four lads that front the show, Asa Murphy, Steve Charles, Joe Speare and Jamie Somers were on fine form and the band played great. We also received the offer to play at this year’s International Mersey River Festival at the Pier Head on Sunday 5th June. This summer is looking to be quite busy with a good balance of very different gigs. I’ll endeavour to keep the events page up to date so keep your eyes peeled and hopefully see you on the road at some point soon.. JW
I played a fantastic gig last Wednesday with the mighty Mike Outram on guitar, Andy Trim on bass and Mark Rose on bass at The Bull’s Head in Barnes. Mike’s playing is outrageously good and massively inspiring. Also this week, my lesson looking at the style of the wonderful Emily Remler has been published in this month’s edition of Guitar Techniques magazine. Hope you can check it out and enjoy. JW.
